← The Flight Crew App

Conditions of use

Short, because the app is in private beta and nothing is being sold. What matters most here is not a limitation of anything: it is which document has the last word, and it is never this one.

WHAT THIS IS

A support tool for flight crew. It reads what you give it, does the arithmetic, and shows its reasoning so you can check it. It never decides anything you are accountable for.

What it is not: not a planning system, not a dispatch, and not a substitute for anything your company issues. It has no connection to any operator and is neither affiliated with nor endorsed by one.

WHICH DOCUMENT HAS THE LAST WORD

Always the company's, and never this app. In any disagreement, on any figure:

Each of those sentences also appears inside the app, at the foot of the screen it belongs to, because a caution that only lives on a page like this one is a caution nobody read.

WHERE THE FIGURES COME FROM

You bring them. Salary tables, crosswind limits and approach minima are yours: they are not built into the app, and they stay on your phone. Anything the app did not read from a document you gave it is labelled as assumed, and nothing assumed is used in a calculation until you have confirmed it. If the app cannot work something out honestly, it says so instead of filling the gap.

THE PRIVATE BETA

Access is by invitation, nothing is charged, and there is no promise of availability: the app can change, and features can appear or go. It works offline by design, but when a service it calls is unreachable it says so on screen rather than guessing.

IF YOU STOP PAYING, AND IF YOU LEAVE

Nothing is charged during the beta. When something is, this is what the three ways out mean, written down now so that nobody meets them for the first time on a bad day.

A subscription that lapses closes the paid features and nothing else. Your account stays, your roster and your logbook stay in it, and you can sign in and export everything for as long as the account exists. Stopping a payment is not a request to delete anything, and we never treat it as one.

Closing your account is something you ask for. When you do, the account goes and the sealed blocks go with it, on the timetable the privacy page gives. Export first if you want a copy; after that there is nothing left to export from.

Deleting is a right, not a favour. Ask and it happens, and the one thing that survives it is the record of recoveries, which the privacy page names and explains.

We will call these what they are. A lapsed subscription is lapsed, not terminated: nobody ended anything, a payment stopped. If we ever have to end an account ourselves, that is the next section, and it is a different thing.

WHEN WE MAY CLOSE AN ACCOUNT

Only for cause, and the causes are the ones on this page: putting another person's documents into it, holding what you are not entitled to hold, or using the service to attack it or anyone on it. We tell you what the cause is and give you fourteen days to answer, unless waiting would put other people's data at risk, in which case we close first and write the same day. Closing an account for cause does not touch your right to export what is yours, and it does not touch your right to have it deleted.

USING IT SENSIBLY

Use it for your own flying, and never where or when it could interfere with the safe operation of an aircraft. It is a tool for the planning table and the crew room, not for the flight deck when the flight deck needs you. Do not use it to hold anything you are not entitled to hold, and do not put another person's documents into it. If your company has rules about the tools you may use or the documents you may copy, those rules are between you and them, and they come first.

PRIVACY, AND THE ONE THING WE CAN DO WITH YOUR BACKUP

What the app does with your data is its own page, and the waiting list has another.

One thing belongs here rather than only there, because it shapes what the service is. Your roster, your logbook and your pay figures live on your phone. If you switch on the encrypted backup, your roster and your logbook are sealed on this phone before they leave it. Your pay is not in the backup at all: the tables and the figures in your pay profile are removed before it is sealed, so it never reaches us in any form. For what does reach us, there is a way back in for the day you lose every device and every key at once. A logbook can be the record of a career, and there is no rebuilding one from memory, so that door exists on purpose. Holding it means we can open a backup, which is why what stands in front of it is written out below rather than summarised.

It is deliberately slow and loud, and it is never quiet. You have to ask for it while signed in; you have to name the one device it may be delivered to before the clock starts; it waits at least 24 hours; we email the address on your account the moment it starts, with a link to stop it, and if that email does not go out the recovery is cancelled and nothing is opened; stopping it also locks recoveries on your account until you write to us; and it is written into a record, in a separate account, that we cannot alter for a year and that we keep for five. One account at a time, never in bulk. It is part of every account and cannot be switched off, because an account without it is an account we could lock you out of for ever.

We will not claim it is impossible for us to open your backup, because it is not. The honest sentence is that we cannot open it quietly. The whole of it, including a court order, the part Amazon Web Services plays in holding that key, and the names of other crew inside your logbook, is on the privacy page.

WHO WE ARE, AND WHEN THIS GROWS

The Flight Crew App is in private beta. One address answers for everything on this page: hello@theflightcrewapp.com

When the app is sold rather than given, this page becomes a proper contract, with the clauses about liability, applicable law and your rights as a consumer that a paid service owes you, drawn by a lawyer. Until then it says only what is true today.

What outlives the account. Closing it, or our closing it, ends the service and not the promises about what we held: what this page and the privacy page say about your data, about deletion and about the record of recoveries keeps applying afterwards, for as long as anything of yours or any record about it exists. So does the line about who owns what, below.

Who owns what. What you put in is yours: your roster, your logbook, your figures, your documents. The app is ours. If you suggest something and we build it, the suggestion was a gift and the feature is ours to keep and to give to everyone else; we will say thank you, and we will not owe you for it. That is the only way a tool built from what crews ask for can exist.

The small print, kept small. If one sentence of this page turns out not to hold, the rest still does. If something outside anyone's control stops the service, a network, a provider, an outage, we are not in breach for the time it lasts, and we say so on screen. This page and the privacy page are the whole of what we have agreed; nothing said elsewhere adds to them or takes from them. And if we let something pass once, that is not a promise to let it pass again.
